You CAN get your goal
A new year – a new goal! You’ve heard this before: when you fail to plan, you plan to fail. That is tough talk, but it’s not just talk.
There are two ways to approach accomplishing your goal: planning your work and working your plan, or just being spontaneous. Planning is about results, and not just about creating the plan. The spontaneous approach may seem like more fun, but it is like not having a plan at all. When we spontaneously run our lives by the seat of our pants, we do whatever action seems right based on current circumstances and feelings at the moment. The spontaneous approach may lead to accomplishing goals, but it is more likely that you will not accomplish the goals you could have had if followed a plan. People who reach their goal are those who have bothered to set one.
There are ten pieces of the Goal-setting puzzle:
1. Choose the Right Goal
The key to accomplishing meaningful long-term success in life is choosing the right goal to focus on. Steven Covey developed a method of categorizing goals into Urgent vs. Not urgent & Important vs. Not important.
2. Be Specific
When a goal is specific, anyone can look at the goal and understand it without asking a multitude of questions. State your goal in the present. Make it clear & precise and have an end date.
3. Must be Measurable
You will know when you ‘have arrived’ when it is measurable. You will be able to measure progress along the way & can even break up the goal into smaller more manageable increments.
4. Must be Attainable
If you do not currently have the skills to accomplish the goal & there is no clear plan for gaining that knowledge, you set yourself up for failure & discouragement. Set goals that challenge yourself, but are within reach.
5. Write your goal down
A goal set that is not written down is simply a pipe dream. You sabotage yourself when you do not take your goal seriously enough to write it down.
6. Visualize Achieving your Goal
Your subconscious mind is a very powerful tool. When you draw your strength from your subconscious mind, you accomplish your goal faster. Take the time to sit in a quiet place and visualize yourself having already accomplished your goal.
7. Establish Rewards
In order to stay motivated and focused, mini rewards for intermediate milestones are important. Break up your goal into 3 or 4 smaller measurable and attainable mile-stones that you can assign a mini reward.
8. Develop an Action Plan
A good action plan details all activities needed to accomplish your goal. This action plan becomes sort of a ‘to-do’ list. Completing each activity in the action plan in order will propel you closer to reaching your end goal.
9. Take Action
A detailed plan must have action. You must take action to reach your goal. Be flexible and willing to change the action, time-frame, or method to accomplish the action, if the original plan does not work as expected.
10. Record Progress
Once you have created your action plan and started taking action, you will stay motivated by recording progress toward activity completion and celebrating mini rewards.
You will find that these 10 Commandments of Successful Goal Setting are a structured approach to plan your work and then work your plan. By implementing this process repeatedly, you will become unstoppable.
